The Assist are a modern indie-band hailing from Walsall. Their latest EP follows a whole host of releases over the last few years, my favourites of them being 'Tell Her How You Feel' and I especially love 'Wonderful' a single that is so perfectly named. It is instantly catchy and impossible not to like. They are great songwriters and are making great songs not to mention their insightful and thoughtful lyrics. Their EP Lost was recently released and it is composed of four brilliantly unique tunes. The opener of the EP is one you might have heard a few years ago if you are already a fan of the Assist. 'Love' is a funky tune which opens with an electronic, dance feel and the guitar is powerful and prominent throughout. The heavy chorus is made up of many integrate layers. Fascinating sounds fly back and fourth, but it is the distinctive vocals that really propel the song forward and they are delivered with great conviction. The vocals have a similarity to the sound of Jamie T. Next we move onto 'All That I Need' a song which has more of a pop feel, this song is all about the vocals again. Front-man Mike Stanton not only sings but he explores a more conversational approach to his lyric delivery. 'All That I Need' really illustrates the range of influences this band has, the song at times reminds me of rocked up version of 'You're Gorgeous' (Babybird) but with influences from the likes of The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays. When speaking to Clash Music a few years back they described where some of the bands influences come from: "We've got mad and vast musical influences. For example, our bassist started life as an MC clashing it out on the streets until he found the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is where the funk element of our sound originates. We also take inspiration from jazz artists and admire a lot of Amy Winehouse’s chord progressions. The Stone Roses are definitely a band that influence us, we have spent hours studying Squire's pedal boards trying to recreate those adverse effects such as reverse delay. There's loads, man! Our lyrics are influenced by experiences as opposed to bands themselves." The third song on the EP 'Exist' is yet another unique tune, this song definitely seems to have the most thought-felt lyrics, the line "We're just existing to not exist" repeated throughout the chorus. The impressive lyrics are the stand out part of this song. The EP comes to a close with 'Hung Up' which has a entirely different feel to the rest of the EP, it's certainly original. A quieter, more subdued piece but none-the-less enjoyable, a pleasant end to the EP. With this EP The Assist have really showcased how good they are and what a great band they've become!
