The Magic Gang - A magnificent debut albumThe Magic Gang the alternative/indie band from Brighton are one of those bands that you feel like you've somehow always known. If someone asked you if you'd heard of them you'd most probably reply with a definite no, but as soon as you hear "All This Way" blasting out of the speaker, you will have that instant recognition. Maybe it's because their songs are instant hits which makes them so memorable or maybe you've just been fortunate enough to be at an indie-club night with one of their indie anthems blaring out. Whatever it is, and whatever they're doing, it's working and I for one really like it. This month they released their hotly-anticipated self titled debut album which has exceeded all my expectations and has been met by a lot of praise. Their music is flawlessly assembled, thinning and thickening the texture of the songs perfectly, with massive pop-hooks leading into monstrous chorus'. There are so many stand-out songs on this album with "Alright" "Your Love" and "Getting Along" just a few songs to put on that list. I think my favourite song on the album is " Slippin' ". The way each element of the song is slowly introduced, from the lone vocals to the thumping drum and rhythmic guitar climaxing at the chorus perfectly. It's fair to say a lot of the songs on this album can be described as anthemic but thats certainly not to say they don't know how to bring it down a level or two as they do in "Take Care" a softer, more emotional song adding another dimension to their music. As we approach the tail-end of the album we are treated to two acoustic renditions of previous tracks, leaving behind the monstrously energetic chorus' and stripping back the songs to reveal their impressive diversity as a band. The acoustic versions are equally as impressive but are more relaxing, its not all about the big hooks and massive chorus'. The harmonies the quartet have mastered are one of the best things about the album as well as the solid lyrics and they really show the fantastic songwriting capabilities these boys have. The album has a sort of nostalgic, feel-good vibe, a magical album to say the least full of timeless classics. I don't know what the future holds for this band but what a brilliant debut album, surpassing all expectations, and instantly becoming one of my favourite albums of the year so far!
