David Martinez - Sensational Singer-Songwriter from TexasWho is David Martinez? Well, he is a superb singer-songwriter from South Texas who's music has been described as a soulful refreshing mix of Jack Johnson's laid back lyrics stirred into a glass of Lenny Kravitz funk. What I love about Martinez is his versatility, not only does he own the stage with his acoustic sets but also can put on a crowd pleasing show with his band, which is exactly why he is one of the most in-demand musicians in South Texas. His versatility isn't just in his live performances, it's prominent throughout all his music. Take his most recent release, the award-winning album 'Piece Of Me' which was produced by legendary LA-based bluesman Leroy Miller, no two songs are the same and each track showcases a different aspect of Martinez' talent. The album opens with the title track, which begins with a casual, soothing introduction that builds up to the dramatic chorus. When asked about the meaning behind the title 'Piece Of Me' Martinez said "Every time I go on the road and do a show I leave a piece of me somewhere…it is like I give a piece of me to where ever I am." and jokingly added "I mean that metaphorically. It doesn’t mean I am sacrificing myself." The opener, I can best describe as a classic, pop-rock song all about break up and coping with break up. His music has been compared to so many musicians and this title track is no different, I would even go as far to say that parts of the track triggered memories of the Red Hot Chili Peppers - maybe quite an unlikely comparison though! The second track on the album 'Something Real' comes from a completely new angle but maintains Martinez' own brand of music. This track is an experimentation with blues rock, and there is a brilliant contrast in this song between the tempo maintained by the drums in contrast to the vocals that are delivered so gently. To add to that there are some great guitar riffs and some sensational guitar solo's showered throughout the song. 'Live For Today' manifests itself in a new direction yet again, moving more towards the sound of the likes of UB 40, slower and more melodic, verging on the edge of reggae. The one constant with the entire album is how easy the songs are to listen to, each track is musically divergent but exquisitely executed and unquestionably catchy. The chorus of the next track 'I'm Alright' completely lives up to that statement and it is irresistibly catchy, this might be helped by the use of the pedal steel guitar that we can hear which was inspired by none other than American Rock and Roll star, Ricky Nelson. 'Rise' is a heartfelt, emotional track with deep lyrics and leads us swiftly towards the tail-end of the album. The final track on the album 'Believe' maintains the heavier vibe introduced by the penultimate track, with more of a subdued feel. Overall, an easy listening album that perfectly pieces together charismatic, passionate lyrics with an unlikely mixture of indie, folk, pop, rock and blues instrumentation. He has assembled a versatile album, with such an extensive range of sounds and influences. Martinez has toured up and down the US, appearing 3 times at SXSW, and most recently preforming at the grand opening of the Aloft Hotel Corpus Christi. David has shared the stage with numerous musicians as well as receiving airplay on countless radio stations. You can catch David this summer as he is embarking on a 44 date summer tour of Texas and he will also be performing acoustic sets as part of his 'Summer Wine Hop' in Texas Wine Country. On top of that, new music is on the way too as a new recording project is also in the works for the band later this year in Texas.
