The Vaccines - Exactly what you'd expect from The Vaccines.Friday night in Sheffield is always a night to remember but even more so this Friday as The Vaccines took to the stage at a sold out O2 Academy. But before The Vaccines appeared, came a very unusual support act, the all girl trio Dream Wife. Who really got the crowd warmed up with their almost frightening set! The stage presence of lead vocalist Rakel Mjol was blood-curdling with her ominous smile and eccentric moves, the energy from the trio was electric. Dream Wife's music has a clear, underlying political message rejecting the objectification of women. I had already checked out a few of their tunes before the gig 'Somebody' stuck out to me and its live rendition was interesting to say the least, with lyrics being close to shouted but this didn't even come close to the swear-packed 'F.U.U' which consists of the main lines: "Gonna fuck you up, Gonna cut you up, Gonna fuck you up" and I don't think she was lying as she passionately proclaimed the lyrics! Dream Wife are definitely a musical experience to say the least, but not for the faint-hearted. Dream Wife left the stage and as the venue got more and more packed the anticipation grew. Soon enough The Vaccines appeared in style to a backing of 'Waterloo' by Abba wearing sunglasses, and they instantly set the room alight. Opening with their faced-paced tune ' Nightclub' from their latest album simultaneously opening up mosh-pits as hands, arms, and legs flailed helplessly all around. The energy didn't slow here as 'Wreckin' Bar' and 'Teenage Icon' were executed out to perfection. Words. seriously, can-not even come close to describing the surreal experience and the feeling when a few simple words were sang "If at some point we all succumb" before Justin Young let the crowd take charge, the goosebumps crept up my arm and slithered down my spine as every living thing in the room got completely lost in the moment, intoxicated by such a classic song, the crowd were left bare to sing the intro before The Vaccines swooped in to completely lift the roof off the O2. They played hit after hit, even newer tunes like 'Your Love is My Favourite Band' were as impressive as the old stuff, I have to admit the latest album is potentially their best yet with countless songs from Combat Sports already feeling like old classics! This couldn't be more true than with 'I Can't Quit' which was the last song before the encore, the way the crowd reacted and the prowess of the performance tell me that undoubtedly in years to come it will be even more of a fan favourite than it already is. They finished their staggering set with "All In White", which -at first - I thought was a strange choice but it absolutely worked, so it didn't take me long to admit I was wrong, it was the perfect choice. What a live act. This was my first time seeing The Vaccines and I didn't know what to expect but I should have known to expect nothing but the best! They provided everything, the looks, the energy, the hits: one of the best gigs I've been to in a while! If you've not yet heard Combat Sports then you should definitely give it a listen!
