It's never a surprise anymore when The Covasettes release new music and we're completely blown away, as this is just inevitable when new music is produced from this brilliant Manchester band. It was well over a year ago that we first featured The Cova's on The indie Rooms, we used the words "Infectious, phenomenal and unmissable" to describe their first few singles. Now, after what feels like an eternity of waiting, they have finally released their debut EP 'It's Always Sunny Above the Clouds' and yet again we're running out of superlatives to describe it! After five successful single releases and a hectic touring schedule, The Covasettes have come back bigger and better with four new tracks featuring Twit Twoo, You & I, Let's Go & Fine Lines. All four tracks are upbeat, bubbly and full of energy. 'Twit Twoo' opens the EP, the song begins simply with a lone guitar before the whole band swoop in and there is that instant recognition of the trademark Covasettes sound. The track is fast paced and full of deliciously irresistible hooks, it is the ideal song to start with and it sets the tone for the entire EP. The second song 'You & I' is one of those songs you hear for the first time and you just seem to know the lyrics and the words are flying around your mind all day. Especially the infectious chorus, it feels like you've heard this tune a hundred times before and that's credit to the lads for creating such a well established, trademark sound. My favourite new track is 'Let's Go' the intro reminds me of so many great indie artists from The Strokes to Vampire Weekend, I'm even reminded of Morrisey in the way Buxton sings the lyrics "Come with me" (a happier, more upbeat version of-course) but my point is that they take a huge range of influences which is brilliant because it has led them to develop such an individual, original sound. The final track 'Fine Lines' ends the EP expertly, this track really puts emphasis on Chris Buxton's vocals which - as per usual - he executes so smoothly and faultlessly. The whole band compliment each other so well, they are like a well oiled machine with Matt Hewlett's lead guitar and Jamie McIntyre's bass working together flawlessly aided by the slick drums from Matt Buckley to compliment Buxton's vocals. Commenting on the track, frontman Chris Buxton said: "To me, it's the best piece of work we've ever done, each track gives you something different from the last, but they all come together to paint part of a bigger picture. It's something we were really keen to achieve, we didn't want to put four 'random' songs together and call it an EP, we wanted to create a journey that people can jump into and I really do feel we've achieved that." I would completely agree with this, whilst previous singles all brought something completely different this EP flows much more like an album and you can feel the progression from song to song, despite each track having many similarities, each song does have an individual feel. 'It's Always Sunny Above the Clouds' encapsulates The Covasettes sound perfectly; there is such a distinctive, unmistakable feel to the tracks that is so unique to the lads. These latest releases do seem a bit more mainstream, and I don't think they quite hit the heights of some of their previous singles such as 'Top Drawer' and 'This Feeling'. However, that's not to say these four tracks aren't great songs - they really are - it's just a compliment to how good some of their previous releases have been. I can't get this EP off repeat, it's just so infectious and catchy even once you turn it off the songs are still swinging around your mind. Again The Covasettes just keep on getting better and better, they are always progressing and they never fail to leave me desperately hungry for more.
