An energetic and thoroughly entertaining debut album. It won't take you long before you'll be telling anyone who will listen just how good this four-piece indie band from Ireland are. The released their brilliant debut album 'Tales from the Backseat' in January of this year. After a long wait, fuelled with expectation, we certainly have not been disappointed. The album has already achieved great success, rising to number one in the charts in Ireland. They are definitely a band to watch right now! The opener "Permanent Vacation" instantly reveals the bands distinctive sound . A fantastically catchy song with plenty of hooks and solid chord progressions, it is a concrete opener even if the lyrics are somewhat simple, yet relatable. But considering most of the tracks were written by the band in their teens this is not too surprising. The songs have a similarity to that of the likes of Circa Waves but The Academic have their own unique stamp on their music. Arguably the most popular song on the album is "Bear Claws", originally released as a single which created some hype. You can tell why, it is irresistibly catchy. So don't be surprised when you spend the afternoon humming along to yourself! (Check out the bands live looper version of "Bear Claws" which is as impressive as it is entertaining)
The album mainly focuses on the coming of age, the band are from a small town in Ireland and I think the album attempts to speak about their experience on growing up there and their journey, with love, friendship and being young at the forefront of the lyrics. The band take inspiration from the likes of The Kooks, The Strokes and the Arctic Monkeys. Lead singer Craig Fritzgerald has said how the band are trying to "bring guitar music back" and how he has "always loved that stuff (indie-pop); with good guitar riffs good melody hooks that crosses over to radio" and this is apparent in their songs which certainly suck you in and this accompanied by that classic indie guitar sound make The Academic a very exciting up and coming band. In spite of that I think its fair to say, although an impressive and exciting first album the band still have a distance to go before walking alongside their inspirations. Overall "Tales from the Backseat" is a solid debut album which is musically captivating and The Academic show much promise and it's exciting to see what is to come after this unquestionably brilliant album!
