SkylightsMusic discovery is something I've always loved, finding a new band that is unheard of and suddenly becoming totally obsessed with their music, until you can't remember a time when you didn't know every lyric to every song. However, on the way to discovering great artists and new music you often have to rummage through a whole heap of bands that, maybe, just aren't quite to your taste, before you find that band that is just right for you. So it is refreshing to come across a band that stands out instantly and pulls you in for a second a listen, as was the case when I came across Skylights. Skylights are an indie-rock band emerging from the small city of York, consisting of Rob Scarisbrick (lead vocalist), Turnbull Smith (guitarist), Jonny Scarisbrick (bassist) and Myles Soley (drummer). They are a very exciting new band. They've only been together for around three months and are already producing their own original music that's heavily influenced by bands like Oasis and The Verve as well as hints of more punkier sounds coming from The Sex Pistols and The Clash. Their single 'YRA' (Yorkshire's Republican Army) is a classic 90's rock-sounding tune. Beginning with an enticing electric guitar, the track soon becomes quick paced and distinctive, it has a similarity to the sound of U2. Full of mighty guitar riffs and emphatic drums with the bass guitar expertly holding everything together. During the hectic chorus lead vocalist, Rob sings "Can you feel it?" and the answer is yes, you can feel it, you can feel the energy building and the urge to sing the lyrics back. It is an engaging and impressive tune and an eye opening single that clearly reveals the bands musical capabilities. Then we come to their previous single 'Take Me Somewhere' opening with more of an upbeat feel, a thoroughly energetic tune, the racing guitar and emphatic drum beats maintained. Both songs offering unmistakable indie rock vibes! You can hear exactly why they are regulars on the York and North Yorkshire BBC introducing show. There is some great music coming from this exciting new band who are definitely worth your time! So, what are you waiting for?
