FlatlandsFlatlands are the smiley indie rock quartet hailing from Oxford. In April of this year they released their second EP 'At The Time It Made Perfect Sense' following their debut 'Provisional Licence'. Their debut EP was fast, upbeat, catchy and quite simply, a refreshing debut. Their fusion of British indie with American pop-punk is engineered brilliantly. Their music in impressively inventive as you can hear in 'One Major One Minor' as it opens with the fast-paced, heavy guitar before opening up a gap for the vocals to swoop in. 'Truth Be Told' is another from their debut, like the previous this tune has a unquestionably British indie-rock feel, they really are quite infectious. To put the icing on the cake these two songs come with two unique, fun and almost sarcastic music videos that you don't want to miss.
The next two singles released took a completely different direction to the first two, coming at us with a much more subdued sound 'One of a Kind' sets the trend that follows their first single 'Reset' from the latest EP which again is more dramatic and slow compared to earlier singles. It was great to see this other side to their music - a bit different - showcasing their versatility and range.
The next single off the latest EP hailed the return of the fierce guitar riffs with strong vocals and again introduces the ingenious fusion of punk and indie. The songs on this latest EP are constructed with such intelligence, there is a delicate mix of the pumping rhythm guitar with the sturdy bass holding the songs together. The powerful, soaring guitar riffs are preformed perfectly not overpowering the vocals. 'Philly' and 'Tub Boys' round off the EP and they maintains everything that Flatlands are about. Exhibiting even more catchy riffs, solos and instrumentation. Who would I compare Flatlands music to? Well, they're quite unique but I suppose a mixture of The Wombats and Sea Girls. If you're a fan of Sundara Karma, The Academic, Marsicans or Circa Waves then you'll definitely want to listen to Flatlands. They are such an exciting young band and I'm eager to see what is to come from the lads in the future.
